YOU ASKED...

About the Book Bitches process

  • Is there a client agreement?
Yes! We think you should know exactly what you're getting. Your invoice includes a simple agreement to a written scope of project and our terms and conditions.
  • How is payment made?
You'll pay our escrow account through PayPal, with invoices issued upon signing and 14 to 30 days after signing. Funds are released to editors upon project milestones.
  • Is there a guarantee?
Our internal quality control standards are the best guarantee of a professional product that takes your writing to the next level or is ready for publishing, depending on your skill level and goals. Because creative standards are subjective, we can't offer a moneyback guarantee.
  • How does Tier 1 service work?
"Fix it!" means that you can expect your editor to make the hard decisions about what to correct, change, add, or delete.
  • How does Tier 2 service work?
"Show me!" means that you want to learn as an author from revision of your own writing. Your editor will suggest changes and hand the draft back to you to complete.
  • What is the best service level for my book?
Your budget may be your guide, but we always recommend the most comprehensive package. Three rounds of revision address your form and your content, and a final proofread brings it all into line and gives it the polish that readers expect from a great book. If you're not sure what your draft needs, just ask your editor.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is copyediting?
Copyediting, or line editing, corrects a manuscript for surface errors, usually including grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, typos, and line spacing.
  • What is content editing?
A content, or developmental, edit evaluates a draft for reader appeal and completeness. In nonfiction, content editing typically focuses on the quality of information and presentation. In fiction, the focus includes plot, themes, and character development.
  • What is proofreading?
Proofreading is a final correction to an edited manuscript to meet publishing standards and eliminate as many lingering errors as is humanly possible. A book is not "finished" until the final draft is corrected!
  • What is ghostwriting?
Ghostwriting is professional composition of a book by a writer for another person. Typically, the "producer" has ideas and a message but not the time or skill to write a book. See more below.
  • What specifications do editors use to revise books?Consistent spelling, grammar, and usage are important elements of easy reading comprehension. To achieve this, editors use the latest dictionary and edition of a style guide, such as Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Aren’t all-inclusive publishing packages a better deal than contracting with you? Short answer: no. A company that includes "everything" does little well, at least as far as creative product goes. We do recommend a comprehensive service for publication—one that provides cover and interior book design, binding, printing, and distribution. Some may add promotion, but value varies. See below for more info on book packaging services.
  • Should I self-publish or submit to agents and publishing houses?
It's complicated. To find out which direction is best for you, assess your priorities by time, budget, readership, and literary goals. Learn more about the difference between self-publishing and conventional publishing below.

Book packaging services

Self-publishers can easily make their books available by paying a one-time fee to book packaging services. The best ones offer cover and interior book design, ebook formatting, binding, printing, and distribution through Amazon and other sales outlets. We are happy refer authors to reputable services, but we don't recommend these for ghostwriting or editing. Hiring inexperienced freelancers is how they make a profit.

The type of book any author wants to produce is essentially a deeply personal product, and that's what creates the potential for a great narrative. Many book packagers use editing templates and narrow working parameters, which can drain the life from a work of literature, memoir, or business how-to. After working with a professional editor, take advantage of one-stop publishing through one of our partner services.

Self-publishing versus conventional publishing

New writers must choose between attracting the interest and backing of agents or publishing houses or self-publishing a book themselves. The easiest distinction to make is via time criteria. How long do you have to spend approaching agents or publishing house editors? How long can you wait for your book to be published? How long can you expect to receive an income from a published book?

Think of the difference this way: While self-published titles can be available within months, finding an audience may take an indefinite period. Yet, while attracting a conventional publisher can take years, finding an audience takes place much more quickly with the marketing support of a publisher. Lead time from acceptance by a house is generally 1 to 3 years; for self-publishers, a book can be on the market almost immediately.

Making money from a published title has a similar disparity: While you may get royalties from a traditional publisher swiftly, sales may rise and peak fast during promotion but then plummet as your publisher moves on to newly emerging titles. On the other hand, while building a following for a self-published book takes time, its ability to generate sales is unlimited. You are free to market the book forever, and word of mouth can only grow. Best of all, if you choose, your book can never go out of print in your lifetime.

Ghostwriting basics

Hiring a ghostwriter is a good option for subject matter experts who are short on time or who are not writing experts. A good ghostwriter has created enough books to develop a system that can then be customized to suit the topic, audience, and client's goals. Prepare to pay a professional to: a) understand and channel your ideas; b) understand your target audience and write a book that will speak to them; and c) create a product that represents an unlimited shelf life and source of income or notoriety.

Why engage an expert ghostwriter? Some clients who wish to enter the speaking circuit want a book that reflects their expertise and lends them greater credibility. Some just want to share their body of knowledge or address a specific issue in business or society. Ghostwriters work with your existing content, videos, or interviews as well as conduct outside research to add context and value a book.
