Self-publish? Find an agent? Get a reliable ghostwriter?
It’s hard to find answers all in one place. Here they are.
Self-publishers can easily make their books available by paying a one-time fee to book packaging services. The best ones offer cover and interior book design, ebook formatting, binding, printing, and distribution through Amazon and other sales outlets. We are happy refer authors to reputable services, but we don't recommend these for ghostwriting or editing. Hiring inexperienced freelancers is how they make a profit.
The type of book any author wants to produce is essentially a deeply personal product, and that's what creates the potential for a great narrative. Many book packagers use editing templates and narrow working parameters, which can drain the life from a work of literature, memoir, or business how-to. After working with a professional editor, take advantage of one-stop publishing through one of our partner services.
New writers must choose between attracting the interest and backing of agents or publishing houses or self-publishing a book themselves. The easiest distinction to make is via time criteria. How long do you have to spend approaching agents or publishing house editors? How long can you wait for your book to be published? How long can you expect to receive an income from a published book?
Think of the difference this way: While self-published titles can be available within months, finding an audience may take an indefinite period. Yet, while attracting a conventional publisher can take years, finding an audience takes place much more quickly with the marketing support of a publisher. Lead time from acceptance by a house is generally 1 to 3 years; for self-publishers, a book can be on the market almost immediately.
Making money from a published title has a similar disparity: While you may get royalties from a traditional publisher swiftly, sales may rise and peak fast during promotion but then plummet as your publisher moves on to newly emerging titles. On the other hand, while building a following for a self-published book takes time, its ability to generate sales is unlimited. You are free to market the book forever, and word of mouth can only grow. Best of all, if you choose, your book can never go out of print in your lifetime.
Hiring a ghostwriter is a good option for subject matter experts who are short on time or who are not writing experts. A good ghostwriter has created enough books to develop a system that can then be customized to suit the topic, audience, and client's goals. Prepare to pay a professional to: a) understand and channel your ideas; b) understand your target audience and write a book that will speak to them; and c) create a product that represents an unlimited shelf life and source of income or notoriety.
Why engage an expert ghostwriter? Some clients who wish to enter the speaking circuit want a book that reflects their expertise and lends them greater credibility. Some just want to share their body of knowledge or address a specific issue in business or society. Ghostwriters work with your existing content, videos, or interviews as well as conduct outside research to add context and value a book.
